SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — South Portland police are asking the public for help in identifying a man accused of robbing a KeyBank on Friday and claiming he had an explosive device.
Police were called to the bank on Gorham Road shortly before noon Friday about an apparent robbery, during which a man in a vehicle displayed a note to workers there demanding cash and stating he had an explosive device. After obtaining an unknown amount of cash, the man reportedly left the bank and drove away in a black Chevrolet Suburban, South Portland police said in a Facebook post.
The vehicle driven by the suspect was found abandoned about a mile away from the bank at a business park on John Roberts Road near the Maine Mall, prompting police to evacuate the buildings in the area until emergency officials could clear the scene, due to the nature of the suspect's bomb threat.
The suspect, described as a white man, was last seen wearing a black jacket, black face mask, black beanie hat, and sunglasses.
Police ask that anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 207-799-5511 ext. 7212 for Detective Jonathan Stearns or 207-799-5511 ext. 7448 for Detective Lt. Christopher Todd. Police also offer an anonymous tip line at 207-347-4100.
The South Portland Police were assisted by the Portland Police Department Hazardous Device Unit and Maine State Police.
NEWS CENTER Maine was at the scene Friday afternoon where the vehicle was found. Shortly before 4 p.m., the scene was cleared, and the vehicle in question was towed away for evidence processing.
Police believe the vehicle may have been stolen.
