SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A man from Buxton has been arrested after a report of shots fired on Commercial Street in Portland and an ensuing police chase into South Portland after the suspect fled the area.
Mohamud Abdullai, 30, was detained by police in South Portland, who were investigating a separate incident of a reported armed home invasion on Sawyer Street, South Portland police said Thursday morning in a news release posted on their Facebook page.
Shortly after midnight, police were notified about a report of shots fired in the area of 262 Commercial St. with a suspect then getting into a vehicle and driving over the Casco Bay Bridge into South Portland, the release stated.
South Portland Police located the vehicle and followed it as it turned onto a dead-end road, upon which a "high risk traffic stop" began.
"A male passenger (matching the description of the Portland suspect) immediately fled the vehicle on foot and into the rear yards of nearby houses, literally running through a wooden fence during his getaway," according to the release.
Portland police also responded to the scene over the reckless conduct charge.
Abdullai was also charged by South Portland police for refusing to submit to arrest and assault for allegedly spitting on an officer.
