HANOVER, Maine — A man from Auburn was arrested Tuesday morning on multiple domestic violence charges following an alleged hostage situation and assault at a campground in Hanover.
Oxford County sheriff's deputies responded around 7:15 a.m. to Stony Brook Campground for an alleged domestic violence incident and hostage situation reported by a woman and child who had apparently escaped, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Sheriff's deputies said they learned Monday that 51-year-old Yvon Soucy of Auburn had apparently made statements about suicide to the woman, and that the woman was reportedly injured at 10 p.m. during a fight between her and Soucy.
Soucy then allegedly refused to let the woman and two children, ages 6 and 8, leave a camper and "was armed with a knife throughout the night," the sheriff's office said.
The woman and 6-year-old child told officials they were able to escape the camper around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and report the incident to a person not involved in the incident, who then notified law enforcement.
Deputies found Soucy in a pickup truck while he was trying to leave the campground with the older child, and he was arrested without further incident just after 9:30 a.m. Both children were evaluated and released.
The woman was brought to Stephens Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, the sheriff's office said.
Soucy was brought to Stephens Memorial Hospital for evaluation, then he was taken to the Oxford County Jail on multiple charges:
- Domestic violence aggravated assault with a weapon
- Domestic violence criminal threatening with a weapon
- Reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
- Obstructing report of a crime
- Endangering the welfare of a child and criminal restraint
The investigation is ongoing.
