AUGUSTA, Maine — A man with ties to Lincoln County has been taken into police custody after reports claiming he sexually assaulted someone Monday morning along a walking path in Augusta.
Augusta police and officials with the Maine State Police responded to a report around 7 a.m. about a possible assault at the Kennebec River Rail Trail.
Police said a bystander who apparently witnessed the incident intervened to help the alleged victim, and the suspect fled the scene on foot, according to a news release from the Augusta Police Department.
The suspect, 57-year-old James Oliver, was eventually located by police and taken into custody. Police described Oliver as a transient from Lincoln County.
Oliver was charged with gross sexual assault, criminal threatening, and unlawful sexual contact. He was held without bail at the Kennebec County Jail, according to the release.
