One man taken into custody after hours-long standoff with police in Brewer

According to police, Nicolas McDonald had a federal warrant for his arrest. After nearly six hours, he was taken into custody.

BREWER, Maine — An hours-long police standoff drew the attention of dozens of Brewer residents near Center, and Washington Street Saturday.

The roads were blocked off after the Brewer Police Department took a call around 9:30 Saturday morning.

“The Brewer Police Department received a call, an anonymous call there was a female being held hostage at 6 Washington Street. We were immediately unable to confirm any of that information," Police Chief Jason Moffitt said.

Shortly after, Moffitt said he was able to confirm Nicholas McDonald, 40, was inside the single-family residence. He added McDonald had a federal warrant for his arrest for probation revocation.

Later that day, around 2 p.m., the woman in question came out of the home. Moffit said the woman claimed she was not being held hostage.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Tactical Team and a couple of negotiators were on scene according to Moffitt. The negotiators could not make contact with McDonald inside.

Around 3 p.m., police obtained a search warrant for McDonald's residence and for any firearms inside. Shortly after McDonald was taken into custody and is now being held at the Penobscot County Jail.
