Maine man pleads guilty to arson

SANFORD, Maine — A Sanford man pleaded guilty to arson on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Portland, according to officials. 

A news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maine stated Thomas McGinn, 49, set fire to a multi-unit rental property at 38 Spruce St. in Sanford. 

Firefighters were able to save the structure from collapse, despite extensive damage. The most extensive damage took place in McGinn's apartment. 

Investigators spoke with McGinn, who admitted to intentionally starting the fire with gasoline and lighter fluid, explaining his intention was to "burn the building down," according to the release.  

McGinn face a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than 20 years, as well as a fine of up to $250,000. 

"He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office," the release stated. 

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Sanford Police Department investigated the case.
