PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man was taken into custody Saturday after police were notified about a concern that he may be building a bomb and was threatening a former domestic partner.
Portland police executed a high-risk search warrant at his apartment on Runnells Street around 5:30 p.m. utilizing their Special Reaction Team, Crisis Negotiators, and Hazardous Device Unit. Maine State Police also responded with the tactical team, according to a news release issued Monday by the Portland Police Department.
Police were notified earlier in the day Saturday that the man, identified as 39-year-old Daryl Walsh, had apparently made threats to a "former domestic partner and a member of the judiciary."
Police were also told in this tip that Walsh was believed to be armed and in the process of building a bomb. According to the news release, police discovered evidence during the high-risk search that appeared to substantiate the concerns.
Crisis negotiators were able to communicate with Walsh and got him to leave the apartment. He was then taken into custody and charged with terrorizing, criminal use of explosives, and violation of a protection order, and he is being held at Cumberland County Jail.
"We are thankful that a concerned citizen came forward and alerted us to this threat," the department said in the news release. "It is actions like this that prevent tragedies."
Police said no additional information about the case would be released at this time, but they ask that anyone with information that may be relevant to the investigation contact them by calling 207-874-8575 or texting the keyword "PPDME" and your message to 847411.
