Portland man arrested in connection with Westbrook homicide

A Portland man was arrested and charged with murder Monday in connection with a homicide in Westbrook on Nov. 28.

PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man was arrested Monday in connection with a homicide in Westbrook on Nov. 28.

Deng Malual, 36, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 61-year-old Clarence James Peterson of Westbrook, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday in a news release.

Police were called for help shortly after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at an apartment on Mechanic Street. Westbrook police, upon arrival, discovered a man who died by what they considered suspicious circumstances, an earlier release stated, prompting them to request aid by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit, according to the release.

An autopsy conducted by the Maine chief medical examiner's office on Nov. 29 ruled the death a homicide, and Pearson's identity was released that day, a release said.

The investigation led to the arrest of Malual, who was taken into custody by Portland police officers at about 2:30 p.m. on Portland Street in Portland.

He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail, and his initial court date has not yet been decided.
