Portland police chase, arrest juvenile accused in Bayside shooting

Police said the juvenile was arrested after a foot chase and taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center.

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police said they arrested a juvenile accused of firing a gun downtown Monday night.

Police said officers responded to Alder Street in the city's Bayside neighborhood around 10:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired.

"While investigating, officers in the area heard a gunshot coming from the direction of Chestnut Street and the Portland Regional Communications Center received a second call for shots fired," police said in a statement. "Witnesses in the area reported a male with a gun fleeing the area. Officers located the individual and arrested him after a foot pursuit where he dropped a handgun. The juvenile suspect was apprehended on Lancaster Street."

Police did not identify the juvenile. He was arrested and charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and theft by receiving stolen property. He was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center, which has been heavily criticized in recent months over its care of juveniles.
