PORTLAND, Maine — A man from Portland has been charged with murder after a man he allegedly assaulted died at Maine Medical Center.
Portland police were dispatched to the YMCA of Southern Maine, located at 70 Forest Avenue, shortly before 1 a.m. Friday for a report of an assault. There they found David Hannauer, 60, unconscious and seriously injured, Portland police spokesperson Brad Nadeau said in a release Monday.
Hannauer was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he died Saturday afternoon, the release stated.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on Sunday and ruled Hannauer's death a homicide, according to police.
Robert Lancaster, 49, of Portland, was arrested Friday morning and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident. He has since been charged with murder and is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail, investigators said.

In a statement Monday, the YMCA said Hannauer was part of its men's dormitory program.
"We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the passing of a valued member of our men’s dormitory program. Upon learning of the attack Friday morning, our staff immediately rendered aid to the victim and called 911," the organization said. "The alleged attacker was taken into custody by the Portland Police Department, who is conducting an investigation with which we are fully cooperating. We appreciate the support of our community during this incredibly difficult time, and our hearts and prayers are with the victim’s family, dorm members and our staff."
