PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man is facing eight charges after police arrested him early Wednesday morning following a brief pursuit.
Around 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, Portland police found a vehicle with a driver asleep behind the wheel in the middle of the road, near the Walton Street train tracks, according to a release from the department.
"After a brief conversation, the driver fled at a high rate of speed and crashed the vehicle into a tree at 189 Ocean Avenue, before fleeing on foot. A tracking K-9 was called in from Falmouth, which ended up leading officers directly to the suspect, who was hiding behind 205 Ocean Avenue," the release stated.
Police arrested 21-year-old Hamsa Omar of Portland and charged him with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, two counts of unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, aggravated criminal mischief, operating a vehicle without a license, driving to endanger, and failing to stop for an officer.
Officers said Omar was in possession of a handgun, 17 grams of cocaine, seven grams of fentanyl, several oxycontin pills, and $5,753 in cash.
Omar was transported to the Cumberland County Jail.
