Last week, fencing that marked endangered shorebird areas was removed and signage was removed and damaged, police said.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Police in Scarborough along with the Maine Warden Service are investigating a vandalism incident at Higgins Beach that took place last week.

The Scarborough Police Department said in a statement on social media that on July 17, signs were pulled out of the ground and damaged, and fencing that marked endangered shorebird areas was removed. Evidence of campfires on the beach was also discovered, police said.

"Fires are not allowed on any of Scarborough’s beaches, and tampering with the endangered species habitat management is a crime under the Maine and U.S. Endangered Species Acts," Scarborough police said in the statement.
