DEXTER, Maine — A man who allegedly led Penobscot County sheriff's deputies on a multi-town chase Friday night fell through ice on a pond and broke into multiple camps before he was arrested on six charges.
According to a Facebook post by the sheriff's office, 23-year-old Shawn Stewart of Parkman was located by deputies at a business in Exeter. They learned Stewart was not allowed to have firearms or dangerous weapons due to prior bail conditions, the sheriff's office said.
When a deputy asked Stewart if he had weapons in his vehicle, he put his car in reverse and backed out while a deputy was "partially in the vehicle," the post stated.
Stewart was later reportedly located at a home on Line Road in Dexter. Officials said when they arrived, Stewart ran into the woods.
Then, deputies found a firearm in Stewart's car. They said they also found a woman who Stewart was not supposed to have contact with due to bail conditions.
The sheriff's office said deputies and a Maine State Police K-9 Trooper tracked Stewart to a nearby pond and later said it appeared Stewart fell through the ice and had gotten out of the water.
More agencies helped track Stewart who was later found hiding under a pile of blankets in a camp that he had broken into, the post stated. Stewart is accused of breaking into multiple camps and the Dexter Police Department will work on that aspect of the investigation.
Stewart was arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail where he faces six criminal charges including three felonies.
