Portland police issue warning about scam involving officer impersonations

The callers claim to be from the Portland Police Department and other agencies in an attempt to collect credit card information to process payments.

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police have issued a warning to locals after the department said it received several reports from citizens receiving suspicious phone calls soliciting donations.

The callers involved in the scam reportedly claim they are with the Portland Police Department, along with other agencies, in an attempt to collect credit card information to process payments, department spokesperson Brad Nadeau said Friday in a news release.

The department said they never solicit donations, and these calls are a scam.

Nadeau warned never to provide your credit card information to any unknown caller.

"Criminals can claim to be fundraising, from your credit card company/bank, and will often ask for your personal information. Only provide necessary card information to merchants you've called directly," the release states.

Anyone with information about these calls can call 207-874-8584 and leave a message on the department’s Crime Tip line. Or text the keyword “PPDME” plus the message to 847411 (TIP411).
