Oxford County man accused of hitting an off-duty officer with vehicle

Maine State Police say they're investigating an incident that happened Tuesday evening in Norway.

NORWAY, Maine — A man from Paris has been accused of striking an off-duty police officer with his vehicle and assault in connection with an incident Tuesday evening in Norway.

At approximately 6 p.m., the Maine State Police Southern Field Troop responded to the incident involving 29-year-old Michael Carleton of Paris and Oxford Police Department Reserve Officer, 31-year-old Joe Correia, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Officials said Correia was off-duty and outside his vehicle when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Carleton on Crocket Ridge Road, then a physical altercation between the two men followed. 

Carleton was taken into custody and brought to the Oxford County Jail and charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to the release. 

Correia was reportedly brought to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening. 

The investigation is ongoing. Officials said there is no threat to the public.
