BANGOR, Maine — A Millinocket man who was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of a baby boy was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
Jessee Mackin was charged with the death of his girlfriend's 6-month-old son, Larry Lord, in 2015.
According to testimony, Mackin was caring for Larry when his body went "limp."
Larry was the son of Anthony Lord, who is serving two life prison sentences for a shooting rampage that killed two people and injured four others in 2015.
Though convicted of manslaughter in May of 2019, Mackin has been out on bail waiting for his sentencing.
During the sentencing on Friday family members of the deceased child and supporters of Mackin were allowed to speak in court.
Janice Clark the mother of Larry said she spent the child's first birthday at his graveside crying.
"I don't get to wake up from this nightmare, Clark said. "In my heart I know Mr. Mackin loved Larry. I could stand here and blast Mr. Mackin but I can't do that. I don't have it in my heart."
The last words Clark said as she walked out of the courtroom were, " I can't stand up here and chastise anyone, I can't."
The father of the baby, Anthony Lord, who killed two people and injured three after the child's death, was allowed to make a Skype call to the courtroom from prison.
Mackin's defense attorney, a therapist, and a person from the American Legion spoke on his behalf about his character, honesty, and desire to volunteer and help others. "Jessee Mackin has a heart of gold."
