PORTLAND, Maine — A man from Massachusetts has been sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking in Maine.

Devon Ashton, 28, of Worcester, Massachusetts was sentenced on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland to 72 months in prison followed by four years of release for "distributing and possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances," according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine.

Ashton pleaded guilty in July of last year following his arrest in May, after trafficking fentanyl in Androscoggin and Cumberland Counties, the release stated.

Court records state the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) purchased approximately 192 grams of fentanyl from Ashton over the course of four controlled purchases between January and March 2023, according to the release. When Ashton was stopped for speeding in Lewiston at the end of March, $8,000 and roughly 59 grams of cocaine were reportedly seized.

"Ashton has previous convictions for unlawful firearms possession and assault, among other offenses," the release stated. "While awaiting sentencing, he was involved in an altercation at the Strafford (NH) County Department of Corrections and has been indicted in New Hampshire state court for the crime of Assault by Prisoner."
