WELLS, Maine — A Massachusetts man was arrested Friday and accused of assaulting an infant in Wells.

Matthew Fowler, 34, of Haverhill, was charged with assault. He was unable to make bail and taken to the York County Jail, Wells police said.

On Wednesday, police said they responded to a report of an infant showing signs of lethargy in the 300 block of Post Road. Wells Emergency Medical Services treated the child, police said.

A subsequent investigation involving the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and York County District Attorney's Office led to an assault warrant being issued for Fowler.

A Wells police spokesperson declined to comment on the condition of the infant or say how Fowler allegedly assaulted the child.

"The Wells Police Department expresses gratitude for the collaboration and support provided by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the York County District Attorney’s Office in ensuring a comprehensive investigation into this matter," Wells police said in a statement.
