Man hospitalized after suffering gunshot wound in Sanford

Witnesses at the scene told police a man was at the intersection in and out of the roadway yelling at vehicles while carrying a knife.

SANFORD, Maine — A man is hospitalized after being shot in downtown Sanford Friday evening.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, Sanford police responded to a report of a man who had been shot at the intersection of Main and Lebanon streets, the Sanford Police Department said in a news release.

Witnesses at the scene told police a man was at the intersection in and out of the roadway yelling at vehicles while carrying a knife, according to the release.

The man then reportedly approached a food truck parked in the T-Mobile parking lot, and a confrontation with the food truck owner ensued, police said,

"The male with the knife was shot," the release stated. "The shooter is cooperating with detectives as they gather evidence and conduct interviews."

The man who was shot was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in "serious condition," according to police.

Police said there is no risk to the public, and the investigation remains ongoing.
