BANGOR, Maine — A man has been arrested and charged following a shoplifting incident in Bangor Friday afternoon.
At about 1 p.m. Friday, Bangor police responded to a report of a man in the process of shoplifting at a business at 520 Stillwater Ave., the Bangor Police Department said in a news release.
When a police officer arrived at the scene and confronted the "uncooperative" man inside the business, the man reportedly fought with and verbally threatened to stab the officer, according to the release.
"During the struggle, a knife was removed from the male’s possession," the release stated. "Customers from inside the location called 911 to report that the officer needed assistance."
When additional officers arrived, the man, identified as 48-year-old Shawn Ashworth who has no known current address, was taken into custody and brought to the Penobscot County Jail.
Ashworth was charged with Class A robbery, Class C assault on an officer, Class C theft, and violation of conditions of release. Police said he was currently out on bail from previous charges.
Police added Ashworth is also being held on a probation violation hold.
"The officer received minor injuries during this incident," the release said.
No additional information was released.
