NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — A Maine man is facing charges after a police standoff in Norridgewock Monday morning.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, Somerset County deputies responded to a report of a man who was "screaming and hollering" outside his Norridgewock home on Red Barn Road, the sheriff's office said in a release.

The man, who was allegedly armed with a firearm, was threatening anyone who called the police, deputies said.

Deputies added it was also reported that the man dragged his dog across the lawn before he shot and killed the dog and buried it.

The man, identified as 32-year-old Nicholas Eckert, also reportedly fired a weapon, which hit a neighbor's house, passed through the wall, and struck a television in the living room, according to the sheriff's office.

When deputies arrived at the home, Eckert allegedly came out onto the front porch wielding an "AR-type firearm."

"Eckert screamed at the Deputies to get off his property and leave him alone," the release stated. "Deputies backed off and established a perimeter."

Attempts to contact Eckert were unsuccessful, prompting deputies to notify the Maine State Police (MSP) tactical team for assistance.

As the tactical team responded, deputies were able to secure a search warrant for the home, as well as an arrest warrant for Eckert.

The MSP tactical team was able to make contact with Eckert and arrest him at about 12:20 p.m. without further incident, the release said.

Eckert was charged with Class C reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and Class C criminal threatening and taken to the Somerset County Jail. His bail was set at $100,000 cash.

He is scheduled to make an initial appearance on April 26 at the Somerset County Unified Criminal Court.

"Additional charges may be forthcoming once the case is reviewed by the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office," the sheriff's office said.

The Norridgewock Fire Department assisted with traffic control during this incident.
