Man arrested following shooting incident in Clinton

Police said after arriving at the scene Saturday evening, a woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

CLINTON, Maine — A man is facing domestic violence charges after a woman was allegedly shot in the neck Saturday evening in Clinton.

The Waterville Regional Communications Center received a call around 6 p.m. about a woman who had reportedly sustained a gunshot wound at a home at 791 Hill Rd. in Clinton, a news release from the Clinton Police Department said.

Clinton police and fire personnel responded to the area where they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck, according to the release.

Clinton Fire Rescue crews provided medical aid to the woman at the scene, but due to the extent of her injuries, LifeFlight of Maine was requested. She was then taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight helicopter for treatment, police said.

"At this time, she is expected to survive the injuries," the release said.

The man who was also at the Hill Road residence, identified as 69-year-old Andrew Fertig, was detained by police without incident.

Police said Fertig was arrested and taken to a local hospital for medical clearance due to his "extremely high blood alcohol content." Officials then brought him to the Kennebec County Jail.

Fertig remains at the jail where he will be held pending his initial court appearance. He is charged with Class A domestic violence elevated aggravated assault.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit assisted at the scene.
