WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maine — The Maine Warden Service is seeking information about two moose that were illegally shot in Washington County.

Operation Game Thief, a nonprofit that works in cooperation with the warden service to offer rewards for these types of crimes, is offering $2,000 per moose for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The first moose, a cow calf, was most likely killed on Nov. 23, off Walker Cove Road in Vanceboro, the warden service said in a press release.

"The moose was shot near the rear of the moose and then was dragged off of the road and left to rot," the release stated. "A concerned hunter noticed the dead cow calf in wood yard and called the Warden Service."

The second moose, a small bull, was most likely killed on Nov. 22, in the area of 34 Burn Road in Topsfield at mile marker 5.

"The bull was covered by fir boughs and had cut trees put out around the moose to hide it," the warden service said. "The moose had one side of the moose meat taken and the other side left to rot. The moose antlers were also taken."

Moose hunting season hasn't been active in that region since October, according to the release.

The warden service said anyone with information regarding either of the killings should call 1-800-ALERT-US.
