LEWISTON, Maine — An investigation is underway after a teenager was found dead Sunday night in Lewiston after police responded to a call about shots being fired.
Lewiston police responded around 10:30 p.m. after they received a 911 emergency call about shots being fired in the area of Rideout Avenue.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a teenager dead in the road, identified as 17-year-old Sahal Muridi of Lewiston, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday morning in a news release.
Witnesses reportedly told officials they saw a silver Mercedes and a black Dodge Challenger both flee the scene, according to the release.
Law enforcement has been able to identify the driver of the Mercedes, who they said has been cooperating with investigators.
Muridi's body has been taken to the chief medical examiner, where an autopsy will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.
Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and Lewiston police are investigating the incident.
The Lewiston Police Department shared a statement on social media Monday afternoon saying they are working with state and federal law enforcement partners to "[step] up the use of directed crime suppression patrols in response to these shootings that have occurred within these high crime areas" over the weekend.
Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
