One person fatally shot in Berwick homicide, second person injured

One is reportedly in serious condition, and another died from his injuries.

BERWICK, Maine — One person has died in what police are calling a homicide in Berwick, and a second person is in serious condition following a shooting Saturday.

Officers with the Berwick Police Department responded to a call about a shooting shortly after 9 a.m. and upon arrival found two individuals suffering gunshot wounds, and both were brought by ambulance to nearby hospitals, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Christopher Utt, 25, who police said was the homeowner, was brought to Portsmouth Medical Center then later to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries and is listed in serious condition, Moss said.

Edward Badeau, 41, of Berwick was brought to Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, where he later died of his injuries.

The incident was investigated over the weekend by the Berwick Police Department and detectives with the Maine State Police, and the death was ruled a homicide.

An autopsy was conducted by the New Hampshire medical examiner's office on Monday, confirming Badeau's identity and manner of death, the release stated. The Maine Attorney General's Office is also reportedly investigating the incident.

No information about a suspect was included in the release, and no report about an arrest or charges were listed.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the town where the incident took place. That has since been corrected.
