Maine State Police investigate death of toddler in Thomaston

Thomaston police were called to Walmart around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday about a 22-month-old child who was not breathing.

THOMASTON, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating the death of a toddler Wednesday evening at a local hospital.

Thomaston police were called to Walmart around 7:30 p.m. about a 22-month-old child who was not breathing, Maine Department of Public Safety official Lt. Aaron Turcotte said Thursday in a news release.

The baby was brought to Pen Bay Medical Center and was pronounced dead there.

Officials at the hospital reportedly called on the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit to investigate the death, which Turcotte said is protocol in all child deaths in Maine.

An autopsy will be performed by the chief medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death as part of the ongoing investigation.

No other information about the case was released.
