LIMERICK, Maine — A Limerick man was arrested Saturday after police said he assaulted his girlfriend then bit a state trooper and broke another trooper's ankle.

Justin Savage, 41, faces a host of charges. His girlfriend, Shawna Morse, 26, was also arrested after police said she tried to help him during his struggle with troopers.

Maine State Police said troopers from the  Southern Field Troop were dispatched to the couple's home on Long Street in Limerick around 10:53 a.m. after a neighbor reported Savage was assaulting Morse.

"Troopers arrived and Savage was detained," state police said in a statement. "During the investigation Savage became combative and a struggle ensued. Savage landed on a Trooper, Sgt. Adam Schmidt, breaking his ankle. In an effort to escape custody Savage also bit Trooper Jamie Fenderson causing two lacerations on his hand. During that altercation, Morse attempted to assist Savage."

The troopers eventually took the couple into custody and took them to the York County Jail, police said. Savage was charged with domestic violence assault, assault on a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest, and disorderly conduct. Morse was charged with obstructing government administration and refusal to submit to arrest.
