YORK COUNTY, Maine — A former postal service employee from South Berwick pleaded guilty to mail theft in York County on Monday and faces multiple years in prison.
Russell Joaquin, 48, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland to "theft of mail by a postal carrier," a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine said.
Joaquin admitted to stealing greeting cards on mail routes in South Berwick and Eliot between January and May 2023 to take cash and gift cards included in the mail, court records say.
He was interviewed by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, the release stated.
Joaquin now faces up to five years in prison, up to a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release, and will be sentenced after a presentence investigation report is completed by the U.S. Probation Office, according to the release.
This case was investigated by the USPS Office of Inspector General with help from the Berwick Police Department.
