Attack involving machete under investigation in South Portland, police say

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A man allegedly attacked his family member before taking his own life Saturday evening in South Portland.

South Portland police confirmed with NEWS CENTER Maine that they received a report about a 50-year-old man who attacked his aunt with a machete around 5:20 p.m. in the area of Memory Lane.

According to police, the man's girlfriend intervened in the attack. The man reportedly then went downstairs in the home they were in where he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The aunt, a 70-year-old, was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police said identities are not being released at this time, and no charges have been filed as of Sunday evening.

The investigation remains ongoing.
