TOPSHAM, Maine — A Lisbon man is facing several charges after an alleged domestic assault incident and fleeing from police, resulting in a police pursuit.

At about 4:11 p.m. Monday, Brunswick police received a 911 call about a domestic assault involving a suspect identified as 51-year-old Thomas Coffill of Lisbon, the Brunswick Police Department said in a news release.

"When Coffill learned the police had been called, he left the scene in the victim’s car without permission," the release stated. "Brunswick Police located Coffill driving the victim’s vehicle and attempted to perform a traffic stop. Coffill refused to stop, [and] quickly accelerated in an attempt to flee and a pursuit ensued."

Amid the pursuit, Coffill reportedly almost struck several police cruisers and civilian vehicles. Coffill then drove over a set of spikes deployed by Topsham police and the vehicle he was driving became disabled in the parking lot at Circle K in Topsham, according to police.

"There, he rammed a Brunswick Police cruiser before being taken into custody," police stated. "He was uncooperative and combative during his arrest."

According to the release, Coffill was charged with the following:

  • Obstructing report of crime (Class D)
  • Eluding an officer (Class D)
  • Aggravated criminal mischief (Class C)
  • Reckless conduct with dangerous weapon (Class C)
  • Driving to endanger (Class E)
  • Theft (Class D)
  • Violation of release (Class E)
  • Refusing to submit (Class D)
  • Leaving the scene of crash (Class E)

Following his arrest, Coffill was taken to Mid Coast Hospital for an evaluation and then later taken to the Cumberland County Jail where is being held on a probation hold in addition to the charges listed above.

Coffill will make an initial court appearance on Jan. 16 in Portland Superior Court, police said.
