Lewiston man charged with murder following standoff with police

Maine State Police said Jerry Thibodeau, 36, of Lewiston has been arrested for alleged murder in the death of 40-year-old Anthony Ayotte.

LEWISTON, Maine — A man from Lewiston has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of another Lewiston man over the weekend.

Shannon Moss, the public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said 40-year-old Anthony Ayotte of Lewiston was dropped off at the emergency department of St. Mary's Hospital around 7:30 p.m. Friday. She said he was injured and treated but died the next morning.

On Saturday, Maine State Police and detectives from the Lewiston Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for murder for Jerry Thibodeau, 36, of Lewiston.

Moss said around 5 p.m., police found Thibodeau at a home on Sabattus Street, but he refused to leave. Just after 10 p.m., the Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were able to take Thibodeau into custody without incident.

Moss said it is believed Thibodeau dropped Ayotte off at the hospital Friday night. She said the two knew each other.

Thibodeau is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail and is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Monday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to perform an autopsy on Ayotte's body Sunday to determine a cause of death.
