Man dies after being shot by state police trooper in Hiram

The man reportedly pointed his gun at a state police trooper, who in turn shot the man, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

HIRAM, Maine — The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating the circumstances that led a Maine State Police trooper to shoot and kill a man in Hiram on Friday.

When state police responded to domestic violence reports at a home in Hiram, trooper Zachary Fancy entered the residence and was confronted by a man identified as 39-year-old Steven Nelson of Hiram who pointed a gun at him, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.

Fancy then fired his weapon and struck Nelson, who later died at the scene, Moss said.

Maine State Police Major Crimes South will complete a criminal investigation and the Office of the Attorney General will be investigating law enforcement's use of force, according to Moss.

Fancy has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice for any shooting involving a law enforcement officer officer in Maine, Moss said.
