HEBRON, Maine — A faculty member at Hebron Academy is facing charges after allegedly engaging in sexual relations with a student.
The Oxford County Sheriff's Office received information Thursday about "inappropriate, sexual relations between a Hebron Academy female faculty member and a male student at the academy," the sheriff's office said in a news release.
Following an investigation that included multiple interviews, 24-year-old Madeline New of Paris was arrested and charged with gross sexual assault and furnishing schedule drugs, the release stated.
New is listed on the school website as the assistant coach for the girls' varsity lacrosse team.
Deputies said New was taken to the Oxford County Jail and later released on $5,000 cash bail with conditions that she has no further contact with the victim, cannot have contact with anyone under the age of 16, and cannot return to Hebron Academy or be withing 1,000 feet of the school property.
She will make an initial court appearance in June.
Hebron Academy issued a statement Friday about the arrest.
Head of School Patrick Phillips said the allegations are "deeply troubling to our school community."
Phillips said New was a graduate of the school and was hired last year but amid the allegations is no longer employed at the school. Phillips also said the school was working with local law enforcement.
"We conduct background checks of all employees and require training related to boundaries and mandated reporting of abuse," the statement read.
