GRAY, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office on Thursday completed an investigation into an alleged assault at Gray-New Gloucester Middle School.

Deputies said the incident happened at about 12:10 p.m. on March 25 but was not reported until May 28 when the parents of the victim told the sheriff's office's school resource officer assigned to the MSAD 15 district.

An investigation revealed a 12-year-old student was physically assaulted by a teacher at school that day, the sheriff's office said.

The teacher, identified as 48-year-old Thomas Morawiec, who is a speech therapist, has since been summonsed and charged with a Class D misdemeanor for assault.

Morawiec is scheduled to appear in a Portland court on Aug. 14.

No additional information was released.
