AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Maine State Police arrested a Freeport man early Tuesday morning in Aroostook County after he allegedly drove the wrong way on Interstate 95 and passed a roadblock.
Troopers with Troop F responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on I-95 at mile marker 266 at about 12 a.m., Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
Tpr. Noah Castonguay attempted to stop the vehicle, a 2019 Honda Accord, at mile marker 281 with his lights and siren activated in the roadway facing the oncoming car. The car did not stop and continued toward Castonguay, who then swerved to avoid a head-on collision. The Honda continued driving north in the southbound lane, according to Moss.
"Trooper Castonguay used a crossover to travel North and intercept the vehicle at Mile Marker 286," the release stated. "To address the imminent risk, Trooper Castonguay used his cruiser to strike the passenger side of the vehicle as it passed him in the crossover at Mile Marker 286 in Oakfield."
The collision caused the driver, identified as 75-year-old James Burch, to stop. He was arrested and taken to the Aroostook County Jail where he was charged with criminal OUI, aggravated driving to endanger, and passing a roadblock.
Neither Tpr. Castonguay nor Burch were injured in the collision.
