ELLSWORTH, Maine — A 68-year-old man is in the hospital after he was shot by police following a harassment complaint Friday night in Ellsworth.
Just after 9:15 p.m., police responded to a Water Street address for a harassment complaint when officers discovered 68-year-old Jeff Paine had a warrant for his arrest for failing to stop for an officer, according to a news release from the Ellsworth Police Department.
Officers reportedly made contact with Paine at his home and informed him of his active warrant.
"Mr. Paine greeted them at the door with a firearm and tried to shut the door on the officers," police said in the release. "Mr. Paine fired his gun at the officers and Officer Joshua Steward fired back and struck Mr. Paine in the arm."
Officers arrested Paine and performed first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene, police said.
Paine is reprtedly being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening at Eastern Maine Medical Center and will be brought to Hancock County Jail for his warrant arrest once he is released. Additional charges are expected.
The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating the incident.
Officer Joshua Steward has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol in police shooting incidents.
