ALTON, Maine — A driver is in custody after allegedly leading police on a chase and attempting to flee the scene of a crash in Alton Thursday afternoon.
Just after 2 p.m., a deputy noticed a red sedan traveling erratically on Route 16, according to a news release from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office. The deputy reportedly ran the vehicle's registration and learned the male operator had two serious outstanding warrants.
Once the deputy turned on emergency lights, the vehicle allegedly fled the area at an increased speed, the release said. Spike mats were reportedly deployed by a second deputy responding to the scene. The vehicle crossed over the spike mats, turned toward a deputy, and the operator lost control of the vehicle, the release said.
The vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and then rolled over, according to the release. The crash occurred on Route 16, also known as Bennoch Road, near Clark Way, Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton told NEWS CENTER Maine.
The sheriff's office said the male driver attempted to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody after allegedly resisting deputies. A female passenger reportedly attempted to leave the vehicle but had to be assisted.
Morton said the male driver was brought to a hospital with serious injuries not considered life-threatening. He said the female passenger was also brought to a hospital.
The incident remains under investigation. The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Maine State Police and fire departments from the towns of Alton, Lagrange, and Old Town.
