CLIFTON, Maine — The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at a home in Clifton on Wednesday morning.
According to an update from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, a 50-year-old man calling from a Getchell Road residence reported at about 7:40 a.m. that they fired a single shot through a bedroom door after hearing noises outside his home.
Deputies were reportedly able to communicate over the phone with the caller once on scene and established a perimeter. Adjacent neighbors were evacuated or sheltered in place, the sheriff's office said in a release. None of the shots fired came from deputies, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies were able to convince the man to put down his firearms and come outside, and he was taken into custody. After a search of the residence, a family dog that had been shot was found dead. No other injuries were reported.
The man was brought to a hospital for a mental health and substance use evaluation after deputies said they used Maine's yellow flag law process to do so. He was reportedly admitted and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
Several firearms were seized from the residence as a result of the incident, the sheriff's office said.
