BRIDGTON, Maine — A Bridgton man has been arrested in connection with a November homicide.
On Nov. 25, 2023, the Maine State Police and Bridgton police investigated a death considered to be suspicious at 237 Pond Road in Bridgton, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
An autopsy was done the following day, which ruled the death of 51-year-old Benita Preo of Bridgton a homicide, according to Moss.
Over the next three months, Maine State Police detectives investigated the case and presented it to a Cumberland County grand jury, the release stated.
On Friday, the grand jury returned an indictment charging 48-year-old Eric Knight of Bridgton with depraved indifference murder, Moss said.
"Preo and Knight were in a relationship and lived together at the Pond Road residence," the release said.
On Saturday morning, Knight was arrested by the Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team without incident at his Bridgton home.
Moss said he was taken to the Cumberland County Jail where he remains being held on $500,000 cash bail.
Knight will be arraigned in the Cumberland County Superior Court on Monday.
The cause of Preo's death is not being released at this time, Moss said.
