Several flights diverted from Bangor International Airport due to threat

Several flights, including one commercial flight, were diverted from the airport, according to police.

BANGOR, Maine — Several flights to Bangor International Airport were diverted Saturday afternoon after an unknown caller reportedly made threats targeting the airport. 

One of the diverted airplanes was a commercial flight, according to a news release issued Saturday evening by the Bangor Police Department. 

The airport, runways, and surrounding areas were searched and found to be safe later in the afternoon, according to police.

Aimee Thibodeau, the marketing and business development manager for the airport, told NEWS CENTER Maine the threats first came in around 2 p.m. She added airport staff followed practiced protocols and procedures while police investigated the situation, which she said ended around 3 p.m.

Thibodeau added three flights were diverted from Bangor and flew to Portland. One of those planes did return to Bangor when the threat situation was cleared.

According to the release, Bangor police and other agencies are investigating the source of the threats, and the investigation is active.
