AUGUSTA, Maine — The Augusta Police Department is seeking to identify the owners of recovered items that were allegedly stolen and have been linked to several recent car burglaries in the area.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the department asked those who have not already reported stolen items to do so.

Augusta Police Department Interim Chief Kevin Lully told NEWS CENTER Maine 20 to 30 vehicles have been targeted over the last couple of weeks throughout various locations in the city.

"These are crimes of opportunity, meaning that the victims had left their vehicles unlocked and the suspect(s) were able to easily gain access and steal a variety of personal belongings and money," Lully said.

One or more people have been charged in connection with these incidents, with "possibly more to follow."
