Shark sighting closes water activity at Popham Beach State Park Sunday evening

A great white shark sighting was reported at the beach at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Officials said it would reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday.

POPHAM BEACH, Maine — All water activity has been suspended at Popham Beach State Park after a report of a great white shark sighting Sunday evening.

According to an alert by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, & Forestry, the shark was spotted at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Water activity was suspended for the rest of the day on Sunday and officials said it would reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday.

Officials said the park would remain open until sunset Sunday despite all water activity being shut down for the day.
