Sanford-area witches trade broomsticks for paddle boards for Sunday event

Half a dozen witches floated in Sanford's Number One Pond Sunday afternoon.

SANFORD, Maine — Some Sanford-area witches traded in their broomsticks for something a little less conventional: paddle boards and kayaks.

Half a dozen witches floated in Sanford's Number One Pond Sunday afternoon, drawing a large crowd of families and even more witches who chose to stay on land.

Crowdgoers said there were more than 20 witches last year. However, while this year's event wasn't as big, the crowd and witches still enjoyed the experience.

"We just wanted to celebrate, and it actually wasn't raining, so I felt like it would be a fun way to celebrate Halloween," Morgan, a witch who recently moved to Maine, said.

One witch took a tumble in the cold water, but that didn't stop her from trying again. Taking an accidental dip in the pond made some others a little nervous.

"My husband actually made me bring a change of clothes," Caitlin Dane, a newer paddle boarder, said.

A handful of witches on land passed out candy to children sitting along the waterfront.
