Portland Little League team one win away from competing at the World Series

After a win over Massachusetts on Monday, the Maine state champions advanced to the New England region championship game.

PORTLAND, Maine — Vying for a chance to play in the Little League World Series, the Portland boys team continued its winning streak in Bristol, Connecticut Monday morning.

The Maine state champions beat Bridgewater, Massachusetts, 7-1 in the New England Regional tournament. Portland is now one win away from advancing to the Little League World Series.

After beating Salem, New Hampshire 2-0 in the opening round on Saturday, Portland advanced to the winner's bracket and will now face the victors of New Hampshire and Massachusetts who will meet in an elimination game on Wednesday afternoon.

The championship game will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in Bristol, Connecticut.

If Portland wins, this would be the second consecutive year Maine has sent a team to the Little League World Series. Gray-New Gloucester and Raymond broke the state's 18-year drought and made it to Williamsport, Pennsylvania last summer.

Only three other teams from Maine have made it to the Little League World Series. Westbrook did it in 2005, Augusta in 1971, and a team of Portland-area players made it back in 1951.
