BREWER, Maine — A new amphitheater is coming to Indian Trail Park next summer in Brewer.
"It's going to be intimate and it's going to be available to all who are interested in utilizing the space," Mayor of Brewer Jennifer Morin said.
Morin said the city has set aside $300,000 for the installation and is finalizing a design that takes inspiration from other local amphitheaters like the one at the public library in Orono.
City officials say the venue in Brewer will feature rows of granite benches along with designated areas in the grass that will provide seating for more than a hundred people attending performances.
"There'll be plenty of room available for families to bring their blankets and a picnic and even their dog to come and watch what's going on," Mayor Morin said.
The city has also been working with local theater companies like Ten Bucks Theatre Company in Bangor to best suit the needs of performers.
Co-founder of Ten Bucks Theatre, Julie Arnold Lisnet, said the group has been performing at the park for 20 years.
"It's a wonderful resource, we are jazzed about doing outdoor theatre," Arnold Lisnet said.
With the new amphitheater, she said that audience members will not only get a viewing experience, but the cast will also have an easier time performing.
"Taking it from a raw natural perspective and putting it in this lovely amphitheater, we're just so excited about it and it's just going to make the whole event grow," Arnold Lisnet said.
One of the main discussions between city officials and theater companies like Arnold Lisnet's has been around the type of material used for the floor of the amphitheater, with hopes to accommodate a variety of performances.
Mayor Morin said construction is set to begin in December and the city is hoping to have the amphitheater ready for next summer.
