DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — A historic gourd graced the scales Sunday at the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta.
Charlie Lopresti set a new state giant pumpkin record, with his prize pumpkin weighing in at 2,365.5 pounds.
"It's a personal best and a new Maine state record," Lopresti wrote in a social media post.
"Shout out to everyone in Maine Pumpkin Growers Organization who helped along the way," he continued. "Shout out my friends and neighbors who helped with the tractor and trailer. Special thanks to my family for putting up with this stuff."
The pumpkin reportedly smashed the previous state record by about 244 pounds.
Lopresti, a local meteorologist at WGME, has been growing giant pumpkins for years.
Take a look at footage from last year's 2023 pumpkin regatta, turning giant pumpkins into boats (some more stable than others) that participants use for a rather entertaining race. The annual event is always filled with thrills and almost guaranteed spills.
