FAIRFIELD, Maine — Twenty young entrepreneurs aged from seven to 17 gathered at the Fairfield Community Center for the third annual Young Entrepreneur Holiday Fair on Sunday.
Autumn Duffy began organizing the event at the age of 14 because she found success selling her own merchandise at other fairs and wanted to create an opportunity for those her age.
"I wanted to bring it to my town of Fairfield and give all of these kids an opportunity to sell their crafts," she said.
Duffy, now 17, says she has learned a lot about event management over the years of planning—although it wasn't always easy.
"It's sometimes difficult to balance everything while organizing the fair. but I've had some good support," Duffy said.
That support system starts at home where her dad, Steve Duffy, says he and his wife have tried to encourage their daughters to follow their entrepreneurial drive.
"Whenever they wanted a lemonade stand, we said, 'Yeah, let's do it,'" Steve Duffy said with a smile.
Autumn Duffy is now studying business administration at Kennebec Valley Community College with the goal of operating her own dance or gymnastics studio.
Running a business is also empowering according eight grade Jayla Jandreau. For four years, she has sold jewelry and other homemade goods.
The experience has made her more outgoing and confident in stressful times, something Jandreau is confident will help her in dream career of nursing.
"Now I know how to deal with situations that get kind of sticky," Jandreau said.
Over 130 customers attended the fair. Through door fees, Autumn Duffy raised about $250 dollars for the Waterville Area Human Society.
Autumn Duffy plans to bring the fair back for a fourth year in 2025 on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving.
