Independent films showcased at Bates Film Festival

The Bates Film Festival is hosting its annual event to showcase filmmakers from Maine and around the world.

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates Film Festival is hosting its annual event this week to showcase filmmakers from Maine and around the world.

The free event kicked off Tuesday and will run through Sunday at locations in Portland and Lewiston.

Organizers hope attendees have an experience that goes beyond watching movies.

"We strive to bring forth social justice issues through the power of film and bring forth discussion, which is why it’s completely free to the public," Aiden Bergeron, an event organizer, said.

This year, 26 films will be featured at the festival, which aims to shine a light on the hard work that goes into making independent films.

"The festival is dedicated to heightening the voices of filmmakers that maybe don't get enough time in the spotlight in the typical film industry," Mac Gaither, an event organizer, said.

Films are playing at the Olin Arts Center on the Bates Campus in Lewiston through tomorrow. Then, Friday through Sunday, the festival moves to Portland. You can catch showings at the Portland Museum of Art, the public library, and at the SPACE Gallery.

Showings are free, but ticket reservation is encouraged at batesfilmfestival.com.
