Varsity Club: George Lazos is ready to bring 'positive energy' to next chapter

The three-sport captain will soon head to Marist College and enter its pre-med program. He also hinted at a possible career in music.

KENNEBUNK, Maine — For the past few years, a Lazos has been on the field or on the track for the Kennebunk High School Rams.

The backyard battles among brothers helped shape George Lazos into the athlete he is now. The 2024 graduate was a team captain for Kennebunk's soccer, basketball, and baseball teams.

"It feels good to make an impact on the sports in Kennebunk," Lazos said.

He did much more than that during his four years in high school. The National Honor Society student also helped tutor younger classmates and assisted teachers in the classroom. Lazos said he was able to take his leadership skills from sports and use that to mentor the next generation.

All the extra work on the field and in school can be a lot to manage, but Lazos said he focused on his attitude as a way to find success.

“You’re going to have [bad] days, you’re going to have [bad] games, you’re going to have bad days at school. But if you can just keep on having that grit, having a good positive attitude, you can get through anything," he said.

The dedication to hard work is really only just beginning.

Lazos will move into his freshman dorm next week at Marist College in New York, where he will enter the psychology and pre-med program. He said he's always had an interest in the medical field because he wants to help people. He had a firsthand look at that career as his father is a family physician in town.

“It’s not going to be easy [...] but I think it can make me into the best person I can be, you know, make me mentally tough, grinding through all those years in school," Lazos said.

While Kennebunk residents may know his family, there's a good chance they didn't know the younger Lazos brother picked up a new talent: playing guitar.

“These past few years, I grew a passion for music, so I learned [how to play] guitar. [I'm] starting to write my own music," he shared. “If that gains traction, maybe my route completely changes from medical to music, but we’ll see."

Regardless of what he decides to pursue in the future, Lazos' positive attitude and work ethic will help him excel. Those traits are what he hopes people in Kennebunk remember him by, and he hopes future Rams find their passions, develop a strong support system, and work hard to achieve their goals.
