Boothbay Summer Theater is working to make the region an arts destination

The theater is putting on its summer production of "My Witch: The Margaret Hamilton Stories" this month, despite not having a permanent place to call home.

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — Every summer, tens of thousands of people travel to the Boothbay region to check out Maine's coastline and islands. The folks at Boothbay Summer Theater want to make the arts part of that list.

The sister theatre is a project of the Snowlion Repertory Theater, which is based out of Portland. Boothbay Summer Theater is using the Carousel Music Theater as its temporary home this season, but its production team has said they are actively looking for a permanent space to set up stage.

"Anyone out there with $2 million? We would love to talk!" a producing director said while laughing. "We would like to build a theater, a small professional theater in the Boothbay region. For now, we're taking it one show at a time and building our visibility in the area."

"My Witch: The Margaret Hamilton Stories" will take center stage this week. The one-woman show dives into the life of one of Hollywood's most famous villains, the Wicked Witch of the West, and is set in Maine.

Hamilton had a summer home on Cape Island which sits just outside of Boothbay Harbor.

"The community is really excited about it," Al D'Andrea said. "Many people have stories about encounters with Margaret Hamilton, knowing her and so on."
